Assistant Director for Secondary Education

2020-2021 School Year

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education and in cooperation with the Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education, the Assistant Director for Secondary Education supports the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education in departmental planning and progress monitoring. S/he will also work to enhance productivity and ensure compliance with DESE rules and regulations. The Assistant Director should be well-versed in performance and operations management and competent in assuming delegated duties. S/he is a leader and critical thinker, ready to solve problems before they become obstacles. The goal is to help the department attain objectives of productivity and employee satisfaction.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Master’s Degree in a relevant background. Current and valid MA DESE license as a Director, Principal/Assistant Principal, and/or Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent.

Ability to plan, organize, and direct a comprehensive elementary education program aimed at preparing every student for success.  Ability to lead improvement efforts toward identified instructional targets by motivating and mentoring building-level administrators and facilitating systemic change strategies, with an emphasis on progressive educational practices. Commitment to equity in educational opportunities for students and leadership opportunities for staff, especially with regard to members of traditionally underserved and underrepresented groups. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents/guardians, the community, institutions of higher education, business leaders, and administrative staff. Strong knowledge of best practices in curriculum and instruction, program evaluation, leadership development, school improvement, budget management, and data analysis. Demonstrated knowledge of state/federal regulations and accreditation requirements governing public education programs.

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

At least five years of experience as a classroom teacher; some experience in leadership is strongly preferred.  Demonstrated knowledge and application of effective secondary education principles, practices, and trends. Demonstrated knowledge of curriculum, best practices in instruction and assessment, school operations and management, and leadership development. Demonstrated record of success in leading strategic educational initiatives that resulted in measurable improvements in student achievement. In-depth experience in the systemic implementation of progressive instructional practices.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with all members of the Office for Teaching and Learning to plan, create, review, and implement academic policies and procedures.  
  • Assist in curriculum development.
  • Assist with budget, space, and resource planning for the successful delivery of the academic programmes and related activities.
  • Assist department heads and administrators with academic-related questions.
  • Advise on academic pathways.
  • Assist with the creation, oversight, and review of units and/or syllabi.
  • Assist with the creation of professional development new class offerings, changes to existing offerings, and/or course approvals.
  • Help and advise in the process of teaching faculty recruitment.
  • Organize the orientation of new faculty.
  • Assist with staff mentoring.
  • Oversee the organization of faculty meetings and assist with building professional development.
  • Provide support and advice to faculty, particularly in matters related to course material acquisition, implementation of learning management information systems, and any contractual obligations.
  • Assist in the administration, management, and analysis of district-wide and state assessments.
  • Administer and review class and/or program evaluations.
  • Create and implement academic policy in collaboration with appropriate personnel, in such areas as plagiarism, absenteeism in the classroom, academic probation, etc.
  • Develop programming that ties specifically into academic goals outlined in the strategic plan.
  • Assist in developing academic programs in collaboration with faculty.
  • Focus the work of all secondary-level personnel on ensuring that all students are on track to graduate college and career ready, with an emphasis on equity for traditionally underserved student groups.
  • Mentor secondary principals and department heads and facilitate professional development for secondary staff, with attention to promoting standards-based instruction.
  • Involve principals in goal setting and evaluation of secondary programs, using on-site visits and multi-point data as the basis for decisions aimed at raising student achievement.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent Secondary Education to provide vision, direction, management and oversight for all aspects of the secondary program, including goals; budgets; curriculum; student assessment; program evaluation; data collection and analysis; school improvement plans; compliance; and the selection, allocation, development, and supervision of personnel.
  • Assist with the supervision and evaluation of secondary principals and department heads.
  • Assist with the Sage program and/or any other secondary programs.
  • Collaborate on entitlement grants.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education and Assistant Director for Elementary Education to ensure vertical alignment.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education.

Work is primarily sedentary, performed in an office setting. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands; to finger; to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and to stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include peripheral vision and close vision such as reading typewritten material. The work typically requires occasional in-district travel to attend meetings.

 

REPORTS TO:  

Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists in the supervision and evaluation of secondary principals as well as department heads and Teaching & Learning support staff.

 

FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT (FLSA) CLASSIFICATION:

This position is classified as Exempt (Professional).

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

12 months 228 days per the FAA collective bargaining agreement.
